Honey Pots

The key to a honey pot is that it is passive.  That means that the hacker should not see it if it is set up correctly.  That means the hacker can’t look for ways to break the honey pot.  They don’t know it is there.

The honey pot mimics a server with security holes.  You might name it something like financial data or employee records.  You want the information to look valuable, but not too obvious.  Hackers use scanning tools to find the open holed servers.  It is quite possible, that your honey pot will be found in minutes after setting it up.

The honey pot is set up on a completely different computer than the one you would normally use.  You will not have it linked to any of your valuable hard drives or any other information that might be in jeopardy.

Honey Pot Benefits

A huge benefit to a honey pot is that you can see what the hacker is doing.  You can see what data they want and learn about the tools they are using.  If someone is targeting you, it is a huge advantage to know hacker habits and what tools the hacker is using.

The other factor is that hackers are annoying.  The honey pot is one of the ways that you can get a hacker put in jail.  You can gain clear evidence of malicious behavior.

Warning !!

If your skill level isn’t high, don’t set up a honey pot.  Honey pots are a security risk because something could be set up improperly.  There are always better hackers out there than you.  You need to keep that in mind.  Find the best professional you can find to set up your honey pot.

Custom Solutions

The best way to beat a hacker is with a custom solution.  If something is different than anything they have ever seen, it makes their job much harder.  A good honey pot is usually programmed in Unix or Linux and the kernels should be custom made.
